Changing the URL or domain of your membership site will require that you update your MemberMouse license to keep the plugin functioning and to maintain any recurring billing. Additionally, there are important steps required to maintain any subscriptions you may have running if you use PayPal. Below we detail how to change your license URL as well as how to manage your PayPal adjustments.

Note: This article describes how to change the URL associated with your MemberMouse license and assumes that the only thing that's changing is your URL.

If you're looking to migrate your current MemberMouse site to another server in addition to changing the URL then you'll want to read the following article about Migrating MemberMouse to a New Server.

In order to change the authorized URL associated with your MemberMouse license, we recommend following these steps below:

  1. Put your site into maintenance mode.

  2. Deactivate the MemberMouse plugin.

  3. Log into membermouse.com and click on Dashboard in the menu bar at the top of the page.

  4. Click on My Account in the menu on the left of the page that loads.

  5. In the License Management area, click on the Edit link. This will make the URL field editable.

  6. In the Authorized URL field, enter the URL for your WordPress site. It's important that the URL you enter matches the URL of your WordPress site exactly. The best way to ensure that you're entering in the URL correctly is to log into your WordPress site, go to the General Settings page and copy the WordPress Address (URL).

  7. Once you've entered in your URL, click on the  button to save it. You should see a message informing you that the license was updated successfully. At this point, you'll be able to activate the MemberMouse plugin on your WordPress site.

  8. Reactivate the MemberMouse plugin.

  9. Take your site out of maintenance mode.

How To Manage Recurring Subscriptions When Changing Your URL

If you have existing subscriptions being processed by a card-on-file solution such as Stripe, Braintree, or Authorize.net CIM this means that MemberMouse is handling the billing for these subscriptions, and no further action is required aside from potentially registering the new URL within your account on their system. Please be sure to check with your payment provider to see if any adjustments may be needed on their end.

PayPal on the other hand does have additional steps to take to manage any recurring payments. If you have custom payment integrations, this same matter could potentially be applicable for your application and you will want to consult with your developer to verify what, if anything, should be done.

PayPal Requirements For Changing Your URL

If you have existing subscriptions in PayPal and you are changing the site URL, three matters need to be handled. Failure to do so may result in failure of communication between PayPal and your site, resulting in inaccurate reporting, and transactions not registering correctly.

If you do not have recurring payments through PayPal, then only steps 1 and 3 need your attention.

1 - Change the Instant Payment Notification (IPN) URL in PayPal Configuration

This is required to ensure that rebill notifications for newly created subscriptions log within your MemberMouse dashboard.

You can locate the new Instant Payment Notification (IPN) URL within your PayPal settings of MemberMouse. Once you locate it, you need to add the new URL to your PayPal settings. For complete instructions on where to find the new URL and how to add it to PayPal, we have these step-by-step instructions here.

2 - Create a redirect on the old URL to send traffic to the new IPN URL.

This ensures the site can continue to receive rebill payment notifications for existing subscriptions.

You will need to set up a redirect to forward the previous Instant Payment Notification (IPN) messages to the new Instant Payment Notification URL. This will require your old domain to remain accessible. You can learn more about locating your IPN URL within this article in the section labeled “Configuring the Instant Payment Notification.”

Once you locate the old IPN URL, you will want to forward it to the new URL which can be found in the same settings area on the newly located site. You will want to consult with your domain registrar or your host if you need help setting up a redirect for your unique scenario.

3 - Change the Auto-Return URL to the new site URL

This ensures that members are redirected to the new site automatically after future purchases.

You can locate the new Auto-Return URL within your PayPal settings of MemberMouse. Once you locate it, you need to add that new URL to your PayPal settings. Here we have complete directions on where this URL can be found in MemberMouse, plus where to add it in PayPal.
