What are Membership Levels?

Membership Levels represent your customers' primary avenue for gaining access rights to your site. They provide base access, granting login credentials and access to account functions. Every member must have a membership level; but, unlike bundles, a member can have only one membership level at any given time.

You can grant members different levels of access based on their membership level, making them ideal for offering tiered access. However, since members switch from one membership level to another, they are not useful for add-ons or a la carte offerings like courses, where bundles should be used instead. New members whose first purchase is a bundle will be automatically added to the default free membership level.

Managing Membership Levels

By opening MemberMouse > Product Settings and selecting the Membership Levels tab, you can create, edit, delete, and perform various other operations on your membership levels. For detailed instructions, please consult our Managing Membership Levels article.

The screen shot below is an example of what the membership levels tab will look like. Here you will see all of your membership levels, each of their settings and attributes, including:  status, type, number of subscribers, associated products, bundles and purchase links. The membership level tab is where you create and delete membership levels, as well as edit existing ones. The Membership Level Columns table in the next section will give you a detailed description of each column.

COLUMNDESCRIPTION
ID

The ID Number is used internally to indicate the membership level in certain SmartTags and SmartWidgets, and in the MemberMouse API.

This orange flag marks the default free membership level. The default membership level is used to ensure that every customer will have a membership level even if the first thing they purchase is not a membership.

For example, if a customer purchases a bundle or a product that is not assigned to a membership level, a new account will be created for the customer using the default membership level.

Click on this flag to mark it as the default free membership.

Name/Subscribers

This column shows the name of each membership level, and the number of members who are currently subscribed to each membership.

Click on a subscriber icon under the name of the membership level for a shortcut to the Manage Members page to view a detailed list of all of the members for this membership level.

Type
Type indicates whether the membership level is free or paid.

Free Members are not billed for this membership.

Paid Members pay for products for this membership.

Products
This column shows the products that are associated with each membership level. As products are created, you will associate them with membership levels, consequently when a customer buys a product they will be given the membership level that is listed next to the product on this screen.

For example, by purchasing the Full Access product you will be given the Premium membership. Learn more in the Products Overview article.

Bundles
This is where you can see the bundles that are available to each membership level. Bundles are used to sell multiple products in a package.

To learn more about bundles, go to the Bundle Overview article.

Purchase Links

The Purchase Links icon will prompt a dialog box to pop up and give you access to a Purchase Link SmartTag and a Static Link for that particular membership level. When the customer clicks on these links they will be taken to the checkout page where they can purchase this membership.

Sometimes there are multiple products associated with a membership level in order to offer different pricing. In that case, you will first be prompted to select the product you want to generate a link for.

Status
The color indicates whether the membership level is active or inactive.

(Green) Active - Customers can sign up for this membership level.

(Red) Inactive - Customers cannot currently sign up for this level.
